Where Wine, Nature, and History Come Together

The Tasting Room is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Nestled in the heart of Southern California, Ramona Valley—often called “The Valley of the Sun”—is renowned for its picturesque landscapes and rich history. Dubbed the “Rhone Valley of California,” it shares the same soil type as Sonoma, making it an ideal region for winemaking.
Originally known as Nuevo in the 1850s, Ramona was home to Native American tribes before settlers arrived, drawn by the area’s abundant water supply and favorable climate. By the mid-20th century, Ramona had gained fame as the “Turkey Capital of the World,” producing more turkeys annually than anywhere else. The town even hosted a grand turkey parade, where women showcased elaborate dresses made from turkey feathers.
Over time, the turkey industry gave way to other agricultural ventures, including egg ranching, horse farming, and viticulture. Today, Ramona Valley thrives as a celebrated wine region while still embracing its rich agricultural heritage.
San Diego native John Schwaesdall began his winemaking journey using grapes from Ramona’s historic vineyards, some dating back to the 1950s. Over time, he planted 4.5 acres of red and white wine grapes of his own, crafting wines that reflect the character of this unique region.
The vineyard is set among the striking granite boulders of the Ramona and Mt. Woodson area—natural wonders that define the landscape. One boulder, weighing 80 tons, resembles a giant cat, while another mirrors the shape of Moby Dick. John takes great joy in sharing these fascinating formations with visitors on his six-acre property, which also offers breathtaking views of Iron Mountain.
Wine tastings are hosted in a setting as unique as the wines themselves—the first permitted commercial straw bale building in San Diego County. Our tasting room, with its thick, insulating straw bale walls, stays cool in summer and cozy in winter. As you step inside, you’ll be greeted by Sir Chester, our friendly copper pig and unofficial mascot.
Guests are welcome to bring their own food (except during special events) and relax among the vineyards, taking in the peaceful scenery. During the summer months, our grounds come alive with live music—everything from classic rock to blues to country western—adding to the festive atmosphere.
We offer a wide variety of wines to taste, and on most visits, you’ll have the opportunity to meet us—the owners and winemakers. We love connecting with our guests and hope your time with us is as memorable as the wines themselves.
Cheers,
Johnny & Shirley Schwaesdall
